4B1 to 4M2
Got up and had a big breakfast since we skipped dinner the night before. I had an eggs sausage hash brown mix that I added some spam too. It had rained overnight again. Headed directly to 4M2 out the back of camp and then pretty much retraced our path that we had taken to 4B1, except taking advantage of a game trail here or there. Still saw signs of bison and elk droppings but no large mammal sightings. For lunch I had spam and pilot biscuits. It was a big spam day.
Got back to 4M2 without incident. Cached the food, set up the tent, then went to the main Wapiti Trail to filter water on the bridge over Moss Creek. It threatened rain but we got 7 liters filled.
Kristian retreated to the tent and I sat at the fire ring and wrote in this log a bit. It started raining so I joined Kristian in the tent and we held up there for about 3 hours. It finally slacked off enough for us to make dinner, but it was a hasty because it started raining again. My socks didn’t dry so I hung them in the tent. We cleaned up and had our shots of celebratory schnapps to celebrate our last night in the backcountry.
For dinner I had beef stew with sticky mango rice. Because it was raining I did not let them sit long enough, so the potatoes were still a bit crunchy as where the carrots. Crunchy carrots are okay but crunchy potatoes not so much.
Did 13547 steps, 60 floors, 7.47 miles
Backpacking, Smoke, and Rain My buddy Kristian and I made a second attempt to hike to Fairyland Basin the week of August 16, 2021, and . . .
